When I was little I always asked why Rachel from Friends looked so perfect all the time and why didn't I look like that. My mum explained over and over again that there was a hair and makeup artist on set to fix her appearance every time so much as a hair fell out of place and that how people looked on TV 'wasn't realistic'. It took me a long, long time to realise that the images we see in the media are truly an illusion and even now I find myself sometimes feeling depressed as I flick through glossy magazines or am sat in my PJs watching an episode of The Kardashians, at the fact everyone looks goddamn picture-perfect-all-the-time.
People will have their own opinions on the 'CELEBS WITHOUT MAKEUP' features in magazines but, personally, I love them. I think us girls need to know that almost everyone can look terrible first thing in the morning, or has bad hair or skin days. The majority of the 'no makeup' features in magazines always consist of the celebrity in question having perfectlly blowdried hair, concealer, loose powder, clear mascara etc - so it's still providing us normal girls with a warped sense of 'natural'. At least these features are a step in the right direction, the ridiculous trend of celebrities to post photos of themselves 'omg no makeup lol!' when clearly covered in the stuff is laughable and doesn't fool me - but it may well have fooled fourteen year old me and merely fuelled my low self esteem and thoughts of how all these wonderful famous people looked so pretty all the time and I never did.
This is why I am so unbelievably impressed and grateful to AnnaLynne McCord for tweeting this completely natural photo showing that she suffers from blemishes. I hope that all the teenage girls (and boys!) struggling with acne or low self esteem in any way, shape, or form out there take some comfort in the knowledge that it happens to anyone and everyone and it can be covered up and treated. These celebrities seem to live airbrushed lives and it's creating a completely warped view of how we all should look. This is exactly why I feel honesty regarding plastic surgery is so important - lying about it, or claiming your wrinkles vanished thanks to Ponds cream (coughKYLIEcough) is insulting and damaging to other women. I have nothing against wearing makeup, having extensions, whitening your teeth or enlarging your breats but damnit, be honest about it. Please.
Below is one of my favourite YouTube videos of another girl, Cass, who is brave enough to show her skin without makeup. I'm fully aware some people won't understand why Cass and AnnaLynne should be considered 'brave' but if you have ever, ever felt that crippling insecurity and self conscioussness with regards to your skin, the hopelessness because nothing you do will make it go away and the judgement from
other people and, most of all, yourself then you will understand how difficult this was for her. I'm sure if you have never suffered with your skin then you may feel I am being dramatic but it truly is a horrible battle to fight especially as, for most of us, it occurs when we really have absolutely no clue about skincare or makeup. It's a really great video showing that you can cover up the most severe acne and this is one of the reasons that I think YouTube and Blogs can be so beneficial as I wish I has access to thousands and thousands of tips and tricks videos to help me cover and treat my acne when I was younger and to see hundreds of other girls going through the same thing.

Just want to put this out there... I freaking LOVE AnnaLynne McCord!! Now if only she would explain how she has that amazing body haha.
ReplyDeleteI am a big fan of Cass on YouTube, incredibly beautiful, normal girl who suffers insecurities like the rest of us. I have to completely agree I am 27 and when I was younger social media was bar to none so only grew up with seeing 'celebs' air brushed to perfection so to have celebs show that they are normal just like the rest of us is refreshing to see.

When AnnaLynne McCord uploaded this photo it was such a relief. I've never seen her with anything less than flawless skin and to have someone of her position in the spotlight to show her natural beauty is a step in the right direction in showing other girls to embrace your make-up-less self! xx
ReplyDeleteGreat post! Obviously we all know that celebrities have insane amounts of styling, makeup and airbrushing but a lot of the time it's incredibly hard not to think "But why don't I look like that?" It really is a little more uplifting knowing that that's all it is and we all have imperfections.

Brilliant post! I agree with you about how the images of 'natural' makeup are so false! I think AnnaLynne looks gorgeous even with her blemishes x
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love this post!! Thank you for this :) xxx
ReplyDeletePossibly the best thing you've written! Being in my 20's with acne can be extremely depressing at times especially when the acne you suffer from was never as bad as when you were a teenager so I fully applaud Cass and AnnaLynne and they most definitely are brave because the thought of not wearing make-up for all to see at times is just unbearable but then you've got moments where you're like 'stuff it, this is how my face actually looks so if I want to walk around with a pizza face so be it!'.
ReplyDeleteThe media has given us an ideal of how women should look and for far too long, women have been subjected and bombarded with this ideal and regardless of whether the woman is 14 or 24, she'll still get pangs of guilt, self-hate and low self-esteem and I think it's better for us to dispel that image and for us to realise that celebrities like Katy Perry, AnnaLynne, Alicia Keys and Victoria Beckham suffer from acne and are just like the rest of us so why do we feel the need to let the guy behind a computer photoshopping those zits away make us feel so bad?
Sorry for this long essay but that's something I've needed to get off my chest!
I totally agree with your comment. I'm 23 and I still, sometimes, feel exactly like that 14 year old girl crying in my room over the state of my skin - we all get those days and we all look like shit sometimes - that's just LIFE! But we need to know it happens to everyone I truly worry about the media 'ideal' and how it is affecting us !!
DeleteThank you very much for the 'Possibly the best thing you've written!' comment :) xxxxx
love the post! she is still so gorgeous without her makeup, I'd never have the confidence to do that

Ah bless her, still beautiful even with spots. I have suffered with acne badly in the past (and still do occasionally if I don't use products to keep it at bay) and know how badly it can knock your confidence. I don't think I would have been this brave to tweet a photo of me at my worst.
ReplyDeleteI always wondered why I didn't look like a celeb as well. Turns out I actually did! We're just fed an image to aspire to that is actually out of most people's reach :(
Great post!
Love this.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely love AnnaLynne McCord and my love has just grown after seeing this! Brilliant post and totally agree. Also, found that video a while back and she is just amazing!! xx
ReplyDeleteLoved this post Jen! The media too has Made me think over the years that you're only beautiful if you have perfect skin, tanned and skinny. Now I'm older I'm starting to realise no ones perfect and I applaud annalynne for that photo. What a brilliant role model to young girls, not like the likes of rihanna or even my fave Cheryl who is never seen without a hair out of place! X
ReplyDeleteAmazing post. Great read and so nice when people can just be real about it all. no one can really be that perfect without some flaws or another. Annalynne has done us proud :) x

Great post. Unless you've suffered from bad skin, you can't understand how crippling it is. Luckily, my skin cleared up but my sister has suffered from acne her whole life and it's awful to see someone so beautiful, clever and talented not wanting to leave the house because of their skin. x
ReplyDeleteLove this post Jen! Its so true that no one is perfect all the time, even though we're all tricked to believe it!

Sososo brave of Cass! Wish I had seen something like that when I was suffering from acne when I was younger!

The pictures of AnnaLynne are wonderful and after seeing them I still think she is just as beautiful, if not more gorgeous for being brave enough to show her 'real' face. I love her. I wish we saw this more often as it would definitely help me feel more confident to go out without make up xx

I had never seen Cass's video before and I couldn't beleive the difference. VERY brave girl! And good for her for putting that out there. GIRLS NEED TO KNOW THIS. I have stopped reading more and more printed media because I feel online media provides a more balanced outlook on beauty these days. Especially blogs and great things like what AnnaLynne has done!
ReplyDeleteLovely post Jen xxx
